Education Programs
A core mission of Opera Roanoke is to provide educational programming for students of all ages to learn about opera. We seek to build an appreciation for the arts and opera in our community by providing interactive learning opportunities for students and teachers. The company offers a variety of program options, all low-cost or free for students. All programs are customizable to fit the students’ needs. Opera 101 for K-12 students
This program introduces students to the basics of opera and opera production through “hands-on” learning experiences with Opera Roanoke staff and artists. We talk about the history of opera, including its place in our current arts landscape, the wide variety of careers available in opera, and much more.
Masterclasses and workshops for choral and music theatre students
This program is ideal for middle and high school students involved in choir, drama, and music theatre. One of our professional staff members will visit your classroom to work with students on music they are currently learning, audition preparation, and to discuss techniques related to the well-rounded musician.
Guest artist appearances in classrooms
Our guest artists are available for classroom visits during production periods throughout the year. Artists speak about their career as an opera singer, give repertoire demonstrations, and conduct Q & A sessions. This program has a fluid format and can be customized to fit your curriculum needs.
Student preview night at the opera
Think your students would enjoy seeing an opera live? Opera Roanoke hosts students preview nights coinciding with mainstage productions. Students can experience the whole show from overture to finale in a relaxed setting. This is a great way to introduce students to the magnificence of the art form.
