Job Title: Director of Development

Location: Opera Roanoke, Roanoke, Virginia

Responsible To: General Director

Position Objective/ Job Summary:

Reporting to the General Director, and also working with the Board of Trustees, the Director of Development will work to create and implement a comprehensive giving strategy that builds partnerships for the future to realize Opera Roanoke’s fundraising potential and fulfill its mission. The Director of Development is one of three full-time positions with Opera Roanoke, an Opera America (Level 4) company founded in 1976.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with the General Director, Director of Operations, and Board of Trustees to develop and implement an effective annual development plan that utilizes evidence-based strategies for cultivation, acquisition, and stewardship of individual, foundation, corporate, civic and faith-based prospects and donors
  • To proactively identify new income generation opportunities, fundraising streams and entrepreneurial partnerships
  • Maintain and expand portfolio of individual and corporate donors, manage comprehensive annual campaigns, cultivate and solicit major gifts for the Operations Fund, Endowment Fund, Production Fund and Planned Giving
  • To manage relations, in the context of development, with the media and the wider performing arts industry
  • Mobilize the General Director and Board to get in front of top prospects and proactively engage in fundraising activity to reach fundraising goals
  • Assist the General Director and Director of Operations in cultivating new grant opportunities and executing relevant opportunities
  • To represent the organization at meetings, conferences, exhibitions, receptions and events

 

Qualifications and Characteristics:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in non-profit management or business administration
  • Certified Fundraising Executive preferred
  • 3+ years non-profit fundraising experience
  • Documented history of successful fundraising and Board development
  • Grant-writing experience
  • Excellent written and verbal skills
  • Ability to interface smoothly and authentically
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills and the ability to consistently meet deadlines
  • Knowledge of Fundraising and CRM databases (Raiser’s Edge preferred)
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suites
  • Self-motivated but works collaboratively
  • Able to work with all personality types
  • Able to build relationships internally and externally
  • Interest and basic knowledge of classical music, preferably opera
  • Able to travel around Roanoke and Virginia’s Blue Ridge region, with the possibility of overnight travel outside the region
